While perusing used boat ad's for 22-23ft PC's, noted a trend to mount more oomph (140-150hp) on the transoms of the mini-offshore's than the 90-115hp's in days past. Comparing 4S Suzuki boat tests on Sea Cat 22's, the 115hp's at 4000rpm did 26.8mph @ 2.8mpg (2003), yet their 150hp's at 4000rpm were doing 32.7mph @ 3.0mpg (2006). Seems backwards, any science behind this?    Report

04-30-2008, 7:12 AM catcurious Joined on 04-28-2008 Posts 3 Re: More HP gets better MPG? Found similar results on a 2006 Prowler 246 (2700 lbs dry) ad...Yami 4S 115hp's @ 4000rpm did ~29mph burning 3.4mpg, while Suzi 4S 140hp's @ 4000rpm did ~32mph burning 3.5mpg...hmmm    Report

Honda for one had developed the lean burn technology which increased mpg's. The trend now is for fuel mileage increase rather than overall speed increase.
