Re: Honda Engine Maintenance

gseiber,

I change my oil, oil filter and grease all zerk fittings.   Honda recommends to do the lower unit oil also and check stuff like fuel filters etc.  If I'm going to take it off to check it I might as well change it.   I do my lower unit oil every 250 hrs and my water pumps every 500 hours.  If you use synthetic oils you can extend these parameters, however, lack of use will breakdown oils and will set the vanes on your water pumps as well.

I am not recommending my schedule because my boat is used several times a week.  Refering to your owners manual for the service schedule is the best idea. Those who are not mechanically inclined should simply take their boats to the dealer for the appropriate service.

Re: Honda Engine Maintenance

I did everything the manual recommends except the valve check.  I am going to have Taylor Marine check that out for me later this month.

You mention synthetics.  I am thinking I will wait till the engine has more hours before going that route.

Thanks,

Greg

Re: Honda Engine Maintenance

gseiber,

The mechanic that I consult told me to not bother the valves until you hear them making noise.  As far as syntetic oils, I only use them in my lower unit at this time.  My consultant mechanic also doesn't rcommend the use of synthetics in the crankcase but recommends a good 10W30 automotive oil like Pennzoil.  He says the properties which allow it to lube so well also allow it to drain off the parts eaually as well.  It is not recommended unless you start your motor at least once a week.  I tried the Mobil 1 synthetic and it didn't seems to do anything extra as far as fuel mpg, only increased my oil change longevity.

Again, I am not the know-all-end-all so you definitely can't go wrong by abiding by the owners manual.

Re: Honda Engine Maintenance

Makes sense.  I talked with service at Taylor Marine yesterday and they said pretty much the same things you say.  They are going to take care of me while I am in OC next week.

My biggest problem is a torn Keel Shield.  If you have ever seen these things when they go bad, it is not pretty.  Getting the remaining part of the Keel Shield off so it can be replaced with a new one is looking like a MAJOR project Crying [:'(].

Re: Honda Engine Maintenance

Hey guys I hate to be disagreeable but have to throw my two cents in on valve adjustments . by the time you can hear valves making noise they are so far out of adjustment they are damaging parts . the hole idea of preventive maintenance is preventing problems . may be the maintenance schedule is a bit of overkill but waiting till you hear valves making noise is the other extreme . some where in between might make us all happy . but the guy that follows the maintenance schedule set by honda will enjoy the honda reputation of reliability second to none.

all you efi honda motor owners please remember the high pressure fuel filter on the vapor  separator this single part is the most forgotten piece on the honda motor i have seen yet

Re: Honda Engine Maintenance

Honda Cat,

I agree with you and I also agree that Honda maint schedule is overkill too.  Yet read the manual and tell me when is the appropriate hours to change the water impellar?  No one has ever given me an answer.  I changed mine after 750 hours and they looked like brand new with no vane curves, pressure drop, or overheat alarms, at all.

I had a problem with my high speed filter clogging on the one motor.  I changed it 3 times and it seems to be fine now.  I think I got some bad varnished fuel in that tank  Prices are a bit steep for that little filter and they are a pain in the butt to get too. Oh yeah. don't forget to get few extra O rings because they don't come with that pricey filter.  You have to be careful on install so the O ring doesn't get pinched also.

Jim

The filter i think is 30.00 and the dang oring is like 9.00

But if you put a little motor oil or light grease on the o ring push the cover on with your fingers not pulling it in with the screws you probably will never pinch another o ring again .the 30 you spend on the filter is lots less than the 600 or so you will have to spend on a high preasure fuel pump . This is the alternative to not changing the filter .

I did not say this 1000 hours on a water pump or two years what ever comes first .
