Livewell Inlet on WC?

All you WC owners.  I have a question for you.  Is the inlet valve for your livewell at the bottom or the top of your livewell?

Mine is at the bottom and I retrofitted it with some PVC to bring it to the top.  I have heard that some of them are at the top.

Re: Livewell Inlet on WC?

On my 2004 WC 330 TE my livewell inlet is on the bottom and the outlet (exhaust) is on the top and I also have a seperate drain on the bottom center.  I prefer this because it keeps from having deadspots in the tank and keeps the scales and detritus from collecting which can also choke out or asphyxiate your bait.  The downfall to this is if the pump quits the water will backdrain through the inlet leaving you an empty tank and dead bait.  Fresh in the top and exhaust out the top means poor circulation of water and less oxygen rich water throughout the tank reducing fish holding capacity.  In South Florida we very seldom go fishing without livebait.  A good quantity of lively, healthy bait can mean the difference in the day being a success or a failure.

There have been several different configurations, in the WCat livewells, from the plumbing to the sizes.   Mine is plumbed exactly to my liking, but it doesn't mean it is exactly what the next guy prefers.

Re: Livewell Inlet on WC?

Good point about the stuff circulation.  I often use the standpipe, which should help this when I don't need the live well completely full.  I have been told by some that the water blasting in from the top actually helps to aerate the water more than when it is pumped in at the bottom.  That seems logical except for the circulation issue.

The draining at the bottom is such a hassle and was the primary reason for moving the inlet to the top.  Maybe I will experiment with installing a tee and running a pipe to the bottom for dual inlet.  The air let in by the upper inlet should help avoid any syphoning.

i think that ideally the inlet is on the bottom and the outlet is on top for the reasons that beast said.

Beast, could you post a pic of the livewell setup for me.  I don't think mine is plumbed and was hoping to see some others.

Re: Livewell Inlet on WC?
Tajon,

I don't have a picture of the setup Beast has, but it sounds like the same as my original setup. It is simply an inlet in the side of the well a few inches from the bottom, a drain in the center of the bottom, and a drain near the top on the same side wall as the inlet. The side of the well with the inlet and the overflow drain are on the port and starboard sides of the boat.

As an update, it has been some time since my original post on this, and the pipe I installed to have the water enter at the top has not hurt my bait. I haven't done a scientific analysis, but I know I can keep small batches of bait fish alive for three or four days with little loss by setting the livewell to intermittent. Also, I no longer kills my entire load of bait by forgetting to close the inlet valve :)

is there a plug or something for the bottom drain in the well?  How does the water fill with one in and two outs?

tajon,

Yes, mine has a small rubber "push in" stopper plug for the bottom.  That is simply a drain to completely drain and clean the well (scales etc) at the end of the day.  It won't fill with this stopper out.
